Make your own news broadcast!
This week's "behind the scenes" episode invites you to make your own news report.
We have included three tasks of increasing complexity, with raw video and scripts.
All materials can be found by clicking the "elev" tab.

- Qatar world cup – workers rights. Add voiceover to the video.
- Ole Gunnar sacked from Manchester United. Add voiceover and clip in fan reactions
- Vegan food from Germany (story from News in English – week 47). Add a new voiceover to the "no voice" version of the story.
Send your completed report to nick.simons@tv2.no
The best reporter will be invited to TV 2 headquarters, where they will make an episode of News in English with Nick!
Be a sports commentator
In "Elev" you will find situations from the men's football game between England and San Marino. Use one or more of these clips and be a sports commentator.
You will need to present the sports footage like it was a live event. It is ongoing or in progress. Use the present progressive. For example: "Raheem Sterling is running with the ball".
A sports commentator also needs to tell how something is being done. Use adverbs to describe how things on the pitch are happening. For example: "Raheem Sterling is running quickly down the left side of the pitch."
Usually, sports commentators do not write down what to say. Tip: to help practice the present progressive and the adverbs, a script might be useful.
Read the news
In "Elev" you will find clips from this week's topics, but they lack the voiceover. Your job is to add voice to these clips.
- What has happened?
- Why is this important?
- What are the consequences of this story?
Record your voice to go with the clips. You will need to present the story in the clip/clips to inform the viewer about what is going on. Something was happening at a point in near history. Use the past progressive. For example: "Protestors were demonstrating in the streets of Oslo, when suddenly...".
The present progressive helps frame an event by telling what was ongoing or happening at a certain time.
- I was running around in pure joy when I found out I had won the lottery.
- World leaders were discussing global warming when the fire alarm started beeping.
- Karsten Warholm was ripping his jersey when he became Olympic champion.
Send your news report to nick.simons@tv2.no - the best reporter will be invited to TV 2 where they will present the news alongside Nick!
Human rights violation in Qatar
In 2010 FIFA voted for Qatar to be the host of the World Cup in men's football in 2022. Since then, the preparations for the tournament have been criticised by human rights protectors. People in and around football have also questioned the conditions which people work under to get everything ready for the football festivities next year.
Migrant workers have been travelling to Qatar to build stadiums. 3200 workers work daily on building the Khalifa Stadium.
- How are workers being treated? Give examples of mistreating.
- Why does this contradict human rights?
- What has leaders and prominent people in world football done about this, so far?
- What should world football do about it, in your opinion?
Do some research, use various kinds of sources and be critical of the sources you use. Reflect on your findings and discuss the questions above with a learning partner or together with the rest of your class.
